Apply the Word – Pastor Mathews
Be a Bridge
Read the Word: “Being unable to get to Him because of the crowd, they removed the roof above Him; and when they had dug an opening, they let down the pallet on which the paralytic was lying” (Mark 2:4).
Apply the Word: Many times when I read stories in the Bible, I’ll close my eyes and try to imagine the scene. I try to literally place myself in the text and see life through the eyes of the people in that time. This story is one of the most fascinating ones that I’ve read. In a nutshell, Jesus is in the house teaching the Word. A person with a paralysis, that prevented him from walking, is being carried by his four friends to get to Jesus, but they cannot reach Jesus because of the crowd. What do the friends do? They tear up the roof and let their friend down in front of Jesus. THEY DID WHAT? Yep! They tore up the roof. Using modern day language, I imagine that some in the crowd probably thought to themselves, “I hope this owner has home owners insurance.” The key to the text is not the damage to the home, but the fact that these guys did everything in their power to be a bridge between Christ and their disabled friend. Their love for their friend compelled them to do something unconventional. Sometimes it takes extreme measures, with wisdom, to get people to Christ and lead people to the Lord. Help us, Lord, to be open to doing whatever it takes, without compromising our witness, to get people to Christ.
